Finishing Curly Maple

This is a second test campaign to identify the best finish for Curly Maple in terms of chatoyance.

Tables below summarize the tests and results of some different finishing sequences we tested.

Pictures below show the effect of different finishes; the are all taken from the same position within consecutive veneer sheets.

Sample 1 – as received [similar to samples 4, 7, 10, 16, 22, 25, 28, 31, 34]

Sample 1 – 1500-grit sanding

Sample 4 – 1 layer of boiled linseed oil

Sample 7 – 3 layers of light shellac

Sample 10 – 3 layers of medium shellac

Sample 13 – 2 layers of dense shellac

Sample 16 – 1 layers of CA glue

Sample 22 – 1 dye vs 4 alcohol + 1 layer of dense shellac

Sample 25 – 1 dye vs 19 alcohol + 1 layer of dense shellac

Sample 28 – 1 layer of furniture restoring oil

Sample 31 – 1 layer of acrylic spray lacquer

Sample 34 – 1 layer of clear epoxy
